NEVER LEAVE THE KEYS IN THE CAR

I didn’t know the two constables who met us at the petrol station, and they gave me odd looks despite Whittaker introducing me as a fellow police officer. But I was getting a lot of strange looks today. More than usual. Probably due to the fact I was wearing Lycra shorts, a tank top over a sports bra, and bringing a teenager in similar gear along.

We moved the vehicles to the car park of a paint shop along Godfrey Nixon Way, where the Range Rover and Jazzy would be safe, then took the patrol car into the neighbourhood. In one short block, the surroundings immediately and dramatically changed. Every home appeared to be held together with patches of plywood on the walls and tin on the roofs. Weeds grew wild everywhere, and old vehicles and household appliances lay abandoned around the tatty houses. Faces pressed noses to windows as we drove by.

Brinkley Drive was the first right turn and the house number we were looking for was on the corner. Except the lot contained three small shack-like homes, all painted a different shade of turquoise blue, with old, rusty cars parked at all angles in the short driveway.

“Was there a unit number on the address?” Whittaker asked.

“No, sir,” I replied, staring at the tall chain-link fence surrounding the small compound-like cluster of buildings.

“Circle around and park on Grackle Street,” Whittaker ordered the driver. “Keep the patrol car out of sight, then watch the side and back as best you can.”

“Sir,” the driver acknowledged, turning the corner at the end of Brinkley, which brought us to a dead end.

“I guess we’ll have to double back,” Whittaker said. “I was hoping not to drive past again before we could knock on the door.”

“We could walk,” I suggested. “Then the car can follow afterwards.”

I went to open the door but forgot I was in the back of a police vehicle.

“Okay,” Whittaker agreed. “Let us out, please.”

The two constables upfront got out and opened the back doors for us. The guy on my side gave me a good look over as I climbed out. As I walked by him, I unlatched the safety strap for his Taser, pulled it from its holster, and handed it to him before he’d realised what was happening.

“Keep your eyes out for trouble, Constable,” I told him. “Not on my chest.”

“What was that about?” Whittaker asked once we were far enough away that they couldn’t hear.

“Just making sure our backup is prepared,” I replied.

I could tell Whittaker knew there was something more and wanted to ask, but we turned the corner and watched several people step back into their homes from their front porches. We both needed to stay alert. The patrol car had served up a warning and now we were easily spotted as not belonging in the neighbourhood.

We walked through the open gates to the property and around the first few vehicles.

“That’s Dilbert’s,” I pointed out, checking the licence plates. “Expired registration, sir.
