Reinoso
It took every ounce of strength Espinoza had left to drag himself through the deserted parking lot and to Calderonâs headquarters, which was a quarter mile away. He felt like he was doing a half-marathon. Those motherfuckers had dumped him onto the ground, still tied up and gagged and beat the shit out of him. One had brandished a silver baseball bat and the other, a tall black motherfucker with thick dreadlocks, had taken the time to carve a crown on the side of his face. The cuts were deep. Bits of flesh and blood ran down his face, into his mouth. The dreadlock guy had left the blade for his convenience. The expectation was that he would untie himself and return home, like a beaten dog.
That was what heâd told him.
That was what he felt like.
It all made sense.
Red and blue lights bounced off a building in the distance, but Espinoza knew better than to think they were coming to his rescue. If anything, the cops would finish the job El Reyâs men had started. It would be another thug off the streets - another fucking Latino gang member they could cross off their hit list. The only hope Espinoza had was of making it to the safety of Calderonâs fortress and even that wasnât a guaranteed lifeline.
He used the bloody blade to detach himself and hovered on one knee for a while, trying to become accustomed to the intense pain slicing through his body. He gritted his teeth, summoning resolve, and then he hoisted himself up and limped in the direction of Calderonâs place, but there was no way heâd be able to make it. When he spotted a raggedy house, which had a porch full of drunk and high men, he staggered in their direction.
The activity stopped. Before Espinozaâs arrival, theyâd been throwing dice and throwing back cervezas. Thick ribbons of smoke encircled the house, but the minute they saw Espinoza, they settled.
One man walked to the front of the herd. The ink on his face made him almost unrecognizable, but thanks to the symbols, Espinoza knew who he was. He was part of his team. That didnât mean the group would welcome him with open arms, but it might count for something.
He tipped his chin and his hand rolled into tight fists. A few other guys walked up and stood next to him. Instantly, they planted their hands against their concealed weapons.
âState your business,â the man demanded. His voice was a low menace.
Espinozaâs nostrils flared. âI donât have any fucking business with you,â he snarled. âI need to get to Ignacio Calderon and one of you motherfuckers is gonna take me.â
The resounding laughs started off as light snickers, before they turned roaring. A few of them shoved each other, like they were at an American grandstand comedy show.
Espinozaâs blood boiled. âClearly, you donât know who I am.â
The man crouched down, gripped Espinozaâs chin hard and turned his head to the side. The bloody crown greeted his vision.
