Pogge also points to other forms of injustice embedded in international markets. The arms trade is notoriously blithe about furnishing militant groups of ill repute in countries rich and poor with weapons, munitions, and other military equipment.32 Additionally, the Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) restricts global access to the fruits of science and technology. A number of essential medicines, for instance, have been evaluated by clinical trials in developing countries but later denied to them as patented final products distributed through market mechanisms.33 Pogge aggregates these examples to support his normative theory of global justice:

The moral point is obvious in small-scale contexts: suppose you can do something that would gain you $10,000 while foreseeably saving three and killing two persons. It would be clearly impermissible to do this if instead you could do something else that would gain you $5,000 while saving three and killing no persons. The case of introducing this WTO agreement rather than a less burdensome alternative is analogous. That most of us do not even see how our governments’ choice of the first option can be morally problematic shows that we implicitly think of the global poor as a pool, as one homogeneous mass like coffee cream in the fridge: one may take some out provided that, over time, one takes out no more than one puts in.34
