The world was different. Though she couldn't quite understand how, or why. Wind whistled around her, both cold and hot at the same time.
Eira stepped forward, gravel crunching under her feet. She was fairly certain she was just down the road from their flat, outside the supermarket they did most of their shopping in. And yet, it wasn't at the same time. The windows of the shop were gone, leaving jagged edges of shattered glass. But it wasn't a recent thing if the amount of dust around was anything to go by. Nor from the ransacked shelves.
"Hello?" she called out, already feeling like that might be the wrong idea. She couldn't see any other people, which was odd, to say the least. Normally the place was teaming with them, going about their days, minding their own business. It was part of living in the centre of a city.
Which made the quiet particularly eerie.
"Hello?" she called again, hugging her arms around her.
Where were her mates? None of them were close, but she couldn't tell where they'd gone. Was it because none of them had been with her when she'd gone to bed?
That made no sense. She hadn't woken up yet, had she? Did that mean this was a dream? It didn't feel like one, but there wasn't anything to really suggest otherwise.
She stepped forward again, looking around her.
The wind stopped instantly and snow began to fall. She held out her hands, catching the snowflakes there and letting them rejuvenate her. Nothing happened there though. She could feel the cold, and the lack of wind, but she couldn't seem to pull energy from the snow.
She tried to pull more towards her with her own magic, but found that didn't work either. Why not? What was wrong with her? She shouldn't be struggling this much, she hadn't since she was a little girl.
The snow stopped.
Suddenly.
In moments, it was completely gone. As if it had never been in the first place.
Confusion warred within her, fighting the terrified part. She had no idea what she was doing here.
The sun beat down on her, hot and strong, completely at odds with the snow of moments before. This made no sense. Even if it was a dream.
A thin man stumbled into view, catching himself on a building and glancing behind them.
Eira stood still, not wanting to startle him. She longed to call out, to ask him if he knew what was going on, but it was best not to scare him. Something wasn't right with the world, but she couldn't put her finger on what.
More men appeared, though they didn't seem to be nearly as stealthy as the first man. One even beat a pipe against his hand.
Eira stumbled backwards, wanting to get out of the way of the group. They looked like they meant business and she didn't want to get mixed up in anything bad, especially when she had her mates' lives to think about too, even if they weren't with her.
One of the men shouted and pointed in the direction of the first man.
