CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Sitting with Taryn’s head resting on his lap, Larkin leaned back and gently caressed her cheek. As he stared endlessly at his sleeping beauty, she suddenly sat up, gasping for air.

“I’m here, Taryn,” he shouted, jumping from his seat to kneel beside the couch. Reaching up, he placed a firm hand on her shoulder and whispered into her ear, “You’re okay. Just breathe in and breathe out.”

Feeling the warmth of his breath against her cheek, and hearing his soft words restored the calm within her soul. Without a word, she turned and wrapped her arms around his neck.

Larkin hugged her back. “You’re okay, Taryn. Everything’s going to be alright.”

Her fingers curled within the fabric of his shirt as she tightened her grip.

“I’m sorry you have to suffer through this, but you’re safe now.”

“Promise me you’ll never leave me,” she exhaled.

“I won’t leave your side until we find some way to beat this madness,” he replied while stroking his hand over the length of her hair.

After several quiet moments passed, Taryn finally pulled away and sat back on the couch with her knees drawn toward her chest. Looking to the fireplace, she began to gently rub her hand over the lower portion of her throat.

Reaching up, Larkin took her wrist and pulled back. His brows instantly furrowed and his jaw jutted forward. Carefully he moved her head from one side to the other before locking eyes with her. “I’ve been with you this entire time. I haven’t let you out of my sight, not even for a second...how could this have happened?”

“What is it?” she asked. When Larkin didn’t answer, she pushed around him and rushed to a small mirror hanging on the wall. There in the reflection she saw for herself the two darkened handprints on her neck. She moved in closer for a better look and could see the skin was parched, as if the handprints had been burnt onto her flesh. Her fingers trembled as she outlined the markings. “When did we come back here?”

Looking up at her from the edge of the couch where he now sat, Larkin replied, “Yesterday evening.”

“At the house...I had another episode, didn’t I?” the girl questioned.

“You did.” He paused. “Andyn was upset, so I went outside to talk to him. We were only out there for a few minutes before I felt something was wrong. When I came back inside you were staring at Jonesy talking about fires and ashes.”

Taryn looked down at the palms of her hands for several seconds with her mouth slightly ajar. “He was scared, wasn’t he?”

“You were pretty out of it...so we were all scared,” he answered.

Tears welled in her eyes. “Is Lazryn here?”

“He went to grab breakfast from who knows where.” He paused. “Lazryn wanted to make sure when you woke up, you knew he wasn’t upset about what happened, and he didn’t blame you,” Larkin explained. Watching as silent tears streaked down Taryn’s cheeks, he knew that she remembered what had happened.

“Lazryn should hate me for what I did to him last night.
