Chapter Thirteen

Red’s gut instinct had never failed him before and this time wasn’t going to be any different. He and Cat had spent the day pouring over their options, routes, advantages, and disadvantages of the last step in this operation. Unfortunately, any track they took to the landing zone traversing the western facing slope exposed them to the observation from the valley below if any of their adversaries below possessed any type of night vision equipment. The infrared sensors would be able to pick them up quite easily. The gamble wasn’t worth the likelihood of successful results in his mind.

They needed to abort.

Now.

“Cat, we need to turn back.” Red was currently kneeling behind a rather tall boulder that provided him enough coverage to prevent his location from being scouted by the dozens of insurgents combing the mountainside descending from above, though they were easily halfway to their pickup point. They were within one klick of the landing zone and that was a lot of ground to travel on a boulder-covered mountainside crisscrossed by deep ravines. “This group most likely has AK-47s that—”

Catori had given Red the night vision goggles so that he could scout the immediate area from his position. His location, which was ten meters away, provided him the ability to scan the slope below them. It was the sight of Safi climbing himself that drew Red up short.

Rage.

Fury.

Disgust.

More emotions than Red could manage to name consumed him, bringing back the day Qalat had so casually handed him off to Safi to do with as he wished. He would carry scars on his back for the rest of his life that were given to him by this criminal. Vivid and horrific images of his team members being torn apart with each and every gouge of the flesh returned as if it were happening right in front of him. He struggled to get oxygen into his lungs and it took Cat calling his name to prevent him from giving away their position.

“Red, our first objective is to get us off of this fucking mountain,” Cat bit out harshly enough that it cleared the fog in which he had been watching Safi wade through as if he were nothing but a figment of Red’s imagination. It was the man he was speaking to that jarred something to the surface, and he was walking away. He couldn’t leave. Red had to stop him. “We have the clearance we need to reach the LZ and we need to take it. The helo will—”

“They’ve been planning an attack,” Red managed to say through his dry lips. Couldn’t Cat see that he was struggling to remember? He and Catori had finished the water they’d taken from the tunnel, but that wasn’t the reason his tongue stuck to the roof of his mouth as he tried to tell her that something was wrong. “The man Safi is talking to…”

What was his name? Red blinked his eyes several times as past images appeared in white flashes, piecing them together as they finally formed a picture.
