When Robin and I arrived at the old tailor shop, the place looked just as abandoned as the day it had shut down. Looking at it from the outside, you would never guess there were any sort of regular events being held here or that anyone at all had stepped foot inside it in years. The storefront looked derelict, the windows grimy and caked with so much soot and general filth from the atmosphere you could hardly see through them in places. And that was only where they werenât cracked or broken. The infrastructure was crumbling, whole chunks of brick missing, and the wood paneling part of the storefront splintered and chipping away. What little I could see of inside looked just as bad, the gray afternoon light falling on thick cobwebs and layers of soot covering cracked and broken furniture, the floor littered with broken shards of glass and debris and rusty old utensils.
I twisted my face at the mess, glad we wouldnât have to wade through it. The front was just to keep up appearances as something old and abandoned and vermin-infested that you didnât want to go near, a way of keeping prying eyes away. The actual entrance for where the games were held was around back, and Robin and I picked our way through the alley, where there was even more detritus and debris.
I was just thankful I didnât have to make the walk in heels this time. Dressed down this way in our more typical choice of clothing, I knew there was more of a chance we might be recognized, especially by anyone like Straw, who happened to hang out more down by the docks. But that didnât matter too much to me, as long as our guy didnât immediately recognize us and make a run for it. And even if he did, weâd come prepared with our full stock of weapons tucked away, just in case. As long as no one made too much trouble about a pat-down, we were set.
We eventually arrived at a short set of steps leading up to a metal service door with what looked like a small, sliding viewing window set near the top. I knocked, and within moments, the viewing window slid open, a pudgy face peeking out, before sliding it closed again. When nothing else happened, I briefly worried weâd just been not so subtly turned away, but after another minute or so, the door groaned open, and two plump men greeted us in front of the doorway.
They both wore matching burgundy tailored suits with pale yellow shirts and no jackets, tiny little royal blue bow ties affixed to the collars, the buttons of their waistcoats straining at their rotund bellies. Their
