FINDING ANOTHER JOB

Maybe you don’t want to stay at your current job a moment longer than you originally planned, even part time. And maybe you can’t, either because you’ve been “down-sized” or because technological change or restructuring has turned your workplace into an alien planet. What then?

Same Career, Different Employer

Here’s another option: change your job. If it’s your current workplace you don’t like, not your work, take a look around for something in the same field somewhere else. Not all jobs, even in the same profession, are alike. Check around. Talk to your fellow professionals. Maybe you loved the fast pace at your workplace when you were younger and brasher and hungrier, but it’s just not for you anymore. There’s bound to be something more sustainable out there in the career you love. Just because you’re a lawyer doesn’t mean that you have to work a seventy-hour week. You’ll last longer working in a legal aid clinic than you will on Bay Street. And you might just enjoy it more! If you’re a teacher, you may find a private school or a tutoring center more tranquil than the public school system these days, and more amenable to letting you design your own schedule. If you’re a nurse, burned out by twelve-hour shifts, maybe you should try public health, or agency nursing.
