Sophie dropped a piece of paper in front of Booker. They were seated around the table eating a simple breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon, and toast.

He picked the paper up and looked at it. “What is this?”

“That’s a grocery list.”

“What for?”

“For groceries.”

“No shit, Teasy. Why the hell are you giving it to me?”

“Because the food is shit, and if I’m going to be your chef, I’ll need better ingredients.”

“You can cook?” Roo asked around a mouthful of egg.

She frowned at him. “Don’t talk with your mouth full. It’s disgusting and rude. Also, yes, I can cook. What made you think I couldn’t?”

He opened his still-full mouth to answer, but she raised an eyebrow and he settled for shrugging.

“No one’s asking you to be a chef,” Reen said.

“I know that. But I’d like to contribute somehow. Not to mention I still owe you a lot for rescuing me. I’m not half-bad at cooking, and I figured it’s probably all you’d let me do at this point.”

“Don’t fucking argue with her,” Mick said. “Just do what she wants. If she’s shit, then who cares? Anything will be better than that microwave shit those wankers at the Wateringhole can come up with.”

“Thanks for the vote of confidence,” Sophie said.

He winked at her. “No problem, babes.”

Booker folded the list and put it in his pocket. “I’ll see what I can do, but don’t expect any gourmet shit.”

She smiled. “I have faith in you, Booker.” She turned toward Charles and Reen. “Now, when do I get that shooting lesson?”

“Right after this,” he said.

“What are you giving her to use?” the Brit asked.

“Thought we’d pick up an M16 from Dan,” Reen answered.

“The recoil isn’t bad and she’ll be able to handle it,” Roo agreed.

“Before you protest about spending the money,” the woman said. “I’ll pay for it.”

Booker waved a hand in the air. “It doesn’t matter who pays for it. We can take it out of the BOHICA budget.”

“Mick, you coming?” Sophie asked before heading out the door.

He shook his head. “No. I’ll stay around here. Someone has to do the dishes, after all.”

“Right, mate, sorry about that. I’ll get it next time,” Roo said and ducked hastily out of the room.

“You bet your ass you will!” his friend called after him.

“You ever shoot a rifle before?” Charles asked Sophie as they walked to Dan’s.

“Sure. Nothing big. My dad let me shoot a pistol a couple of times, but that’s about the extent of it. I’ve seen lots of weapons fired.”

“Seeing and doing are two different things.”

“I know that.”

“You’ll do great,” Reen said.

“How do you know?”

“You picked up the knife-throwing fast enough. Throwing a knife and shooting a rifle are, obviously, two hugely different things, but your aim is good, and that’ll help.”

“I’m a quick study.”

“Where are we taking her to shoot?” Roo asked.

“There’s that range out behind the Wateringhole,” Charles suggested.

“I never understood why they put that thing there,” Reen said.

“Why?” Roo asked.

“Alcohol and precision shooting don’t mix.”

“At least they’re shooting at targets,” the American pointed out, “and not each other.
