“These are the most common types of problems. Think of them this way. When it snows and your driveway is covered, your challenge is getting dug out so you can get to work. You don’t need to hire a consultant or convene a think tank. You just need to grab a shovel and dig in or hire the kid down the street to do it. The problem is one that can be solved by using specialized knowledge you already have or finding the right expert who has the solution.”
Bob nodded. “That makes sense to me. When we have an IT problem at the office, we bring our tech guys in, or if it’s over their head, we hire an IT consultant. Typical business problems. Got it.”
David agreed. “Yes, but there is a catch here. A lot of leaders imagine that every problem is this type of problem, and so they believe that all they need to do is to hire the right expert. But many problems are more complex than that. Before we get too far down the trail, let me frame it this way. Each side of the triangle—I call this the ‘Leadership Triangle,’ by the way—represents a specific sort of leadership challenge. The challenge of a leader is to identify which type of challenge is in front of him or her at any given moment. Knowing what kind of challenge you are facing opens up a range of options from which a leader can choose a response.
“Each type of challenge has several components in terms of the right response: the leader’s role, the leader’s tone, the questions the leader must ask and get the group to ask, the style of relating the leader chooses, the way the leader approaches the problem, and the tense the leader must live in.”
David went back to the board, drew four columns, and put the following information on the chart:
Tactical
Strategic
Transformational
