As our business has concluded, I have left the agreed-upon payment with the innkeeper. As I'm sure you understand, considering the circumstances, any potential bonuses are null and void.

The stark formality and sense of dismissiveness pricked her like thorns beneath the skin, and she blinked back tears at the unexpected pain.

Not that Aileen didn't deserve worse.

The only surprise was that he actually paid her. She really hadn't expected that. It added another weight to the pile of guilt. Even when she betrayed him, he kept his word and held to the agreement.

Aileen crumpled paper in hand and tossed it in the fire.

This was a setback. But she'd learned to roll with circumstances when she was still a child.

Now, she had some decisions to make.

But first, she needed breakfast and to collect her money.

Rory waited in a thick stand of trees half a mile beyond the south gate, watching the traffic moving along the south road with keen interest.

It was a well-traveled thoroughfare, but not nearly as busy as the High Road. A few farmers and merchants coming and going, but there were time and gaps between groups.

By the time the Keres' caravan passed by, Rory knew he needed to be patient and keep his distance if he wanted to stay out of sight.

So he held his position and simply watched as they trundled by.

Cyrus rode at the head of the procession. Dressed in fighting leathers and carrying a monster sword strapped to his back, he wasn't even trying to pass as a butler any longer.

An expensive carriage, emblazoned with the familiar jaguar coat of arms, carried Lady Isadora and her maid in style. Behind the coach, an overladen wagon trudged along, slowing the pace of the two dozen men riding guard.

As they rolled past the grove where Rory had concealed himself, he closed his eyes and let his senses and instincts roam free.

Despite the pile of boxes and chests poorly disguised beneath the tarp covering the wagon bed, there was still not one hint of magic in the air.

And the complete lack made Rory even more suspicious than Isadora's frantic rush to get out of town.

Something was going on. Something important. And he didn't have the first clue what it was.

Rory would give anything for one of Evie's trained pigeons right now. Going this alone was not his inclination. He much preferred to have a solid plan and trusted allies at his back. But there was no time to wait. The Keres would be tucked away in their fortified manor before a message could even reach the pack.

So, once the caravan was well out of sight, Rory nudged his horse out of concealment and settled in to follow at a sedate pace.

The caravan would need to stop for the night at least once on their way south. Which was Rory’s best chance to get a look at what was hiding in the wagon.

He just needed to bide his time and not get caught.

The ease with which the innkeeper handed over the money Rory left in his safekeeping surprised Aileen.
