UNEXPECTED VISITORS

Whether or not it was Sonja’s example is difficult to say. But as her name grew from amusing anecdote, as in “I saw a woman fight two men and win,” to the creature of campfire legend that she became, it is clear that a small, but fearsome, fighter class of young women emerged in areas she’d visited, however briefly.

Young women previously given the choice of acolyte nun or stolid wife began to pick up arms, most particularly hunting bows and lightweight swords, again, whether intentionally or unintentionally following Sonja’s lead. They found heavy armor difficult to navigate, but more importantly, it negated what speed advantage might save their lives in combat.*

So they stuck to leather armor or what light scale or chain they could afford that would not restrict their movements. They often wore war paint; sometimes they wore dried bits of their defeated opponents in their hair. This gave the benefit of frankly terrifying their detractors, while also providing a sense of belonging to a confederacy of isolated fighters. The fashion leaked past borders and across religions to become a symbol, a message to say, “This woman is a fighter—approach at risk.”

The final thread could well be completely coincidental. But wherever these women appeared, on the trail or the battlefield, they were called “wild women.”

Or, more simply, “Devil Women.”
