‘Honey, I’m home!’ camped David as he closed the front door behind him. ‘Where are you, Dildo’s delicious delight!’ he carolled.
‘In here light of my life!’ carolled back James, ‘here’ being the study.
Grinning, David placed several Troubadour Deli bags on the Andrew Martin console table, followed by his keys. ‘How’s my already deflowered bride-to-be?’ he called, grinning at his reflection in the mirror above the console. ‘God, you’ll make a beautiful bride and groom!’ David quipped. ‘Jamie, pour me a glass of wine, would you, please? I was just working out my role for the wedding night. Who carries who through the door and who gets the first and second entry…’
‘You enter with me and then enter me, you idiot. It goes without saying. I’ll also be wearing my wedding veil, remember! You can sneak up on Frondy from behind and lift his veil at the same time!’
‘Sounds all right to me. I feel we will need a few rehearsals beforehand though!’
‘But of course!’
‘Jamie, I’ll just take the salads and stuff plus the ice cream downstairs to la cucina. I’ll join you in a sec!’
‘I’ll have a glass of wine waiting for the groom-to-be. I’m just finishing off a quick sketch for the morning.’
‘Ah, the dedicated designer! You know what they say about all work and no play!’
‘So groom-to-be, come and play!’
David returned to the study, where he found James sitting at the desk, a notebook and sketchpad in front of him. ‘Just finishing the most ravishing little design for one of the wanton clients’ boudoir curtains. Talk about Jewy Louis! But she’ll love it!’ said James, setting down his felt pen with a flourish. ‘Hi!’ he added softly.
David moved across to the desk where James sat in the soft glow of the desk lamp. He gently ruffled James’s hair and gave him a light kiss on the forehead. ‘So how is my blushing, virgin bride of several thousand-and-one nights? Tonight being the extra one!’
‘Delirious! But honestly, Dildo, if you could have seen her! HM, not your bride of yore. No, worse even, heard her! This time she would have made even the legendary Callas’s Medea look mundane!’ James took hold of David’s hand and kissed it. ‘Quite a scene, Dildo, quite a scene. Even for her!’
‘Poor Jamie. Well, what’s done is done, so let’s make the best of it.’ David took a sip of his Pouilly-Fuissé. ‘Delicious!’ He smacked his lips to emphasise the point. ‘Just what the shrink ordered!’ He smiled at the seated James. ‘Everybody who is anybody in the gay world will be doing it, so we may as well get on to the “in vogue” bandwagon and go for it!’ They looked at each other and raised their glasses in an exaggerated toast.
‘Gold!’ said James dramatically.
‘Gold?’
‘Or pink!’
‘Pink?’
‘The colour theme for the wedding. HM’s most immediate concern. I said you’d go for gold.’
‘Sounds like the fucking Olympics!’
‘Well, as far as you and I are concerned, Dildo, we have already “gone for gold” and won several marathons
