The two Russians were seated in the far corner of the lounge area, enjoying a late afternoon drink, waiting for their targets to appear. They’d been sitting there since they’d seen them check in to the hotel an hour earlier. Miroslav had heard the conversation about the club upstairs, and watched discreetly as the Englishman, Jack West, completed the membership form that had been handed to him. He looked on as West got up and handed the form back to the girl at the reception desk.

“Here you go. I’ll not hold my breath for an invite,” Jack said, handing the completed card back to the receptionist.

“Oh, you never know,” the receptionist said, smiling.

“So do you know if the club will be open tonight?” Laila asked the girl.

“Hmm, hold on,” she said, checking the computer screen in front of her. “Oh, I can see it’s closed for temporary maintenance at the moment…wait, oh, yes, it looks like the cleaner has been booked to clean up after whatever is being done up there at…six p.m., so I don’t see why it won’t be open at the usual time after that, eight p.m. tonight,” she said, shrugging her shoulders.

“Great, thanks very much. Hopefully we can see it later,” Laila said.

“I hope so too,” the girl said, smiling, before turning to assist another couple who’d just appeared.

“Things are looking up slightly,” Jack said, putting his arm around Laila’s shoulders and ushering her towards the Atlantic Bar area and the French doors at the back, which led out on to the bar’s rear terrace.
