"About my wife--" Dengler started.

"She's doing fine, Mr. Talbert," Grodin said, ushering him through the interior reception door into the clinic proper. "She's resting comfortably. She hasn't fully recovered from her earlier 'sedation,' but she is awake and she's suffering no discomfort."

The interior of the clinic was surprisingly low-key, with prints of famous paintings on the peach-colored walls and plants dividing spaces here and there. The actual treatment area was small with the living areas taking up most of the building's space. Love seats and overstuffed chairs near beds, drapes, and homey furnishings suggested anything but the sterile environment of a hospital. Farther back toward the rear of the building living spaces became locked rooms. Through wire-reinforced windows Dengler saw desperate faces, anger and madness.

Dengler realized Grodin had said nothing more after they left the proximity of the receptionist. He wondered how much he knew. Was he 'in' on the 'joke?' Or was he merely a doctor treating a patient and leaving the ugly details to family, friends, and the FBI?

"Doctor, at times my wife may say things that are... not true."

Grodin smiled before unlocking a door that led to a private wing. A sign stated, No Admittance -- Authorized Personnel Only. They entered the next level of security from the locked rooms Dengler saw a moment before. Here were locked rooms within a locked room. "Mr. Talbert," Grodin said, waving him through the door, "Mrs. Talbert's condition has been carefully explained to me by her previous physician." Inside the enclosed area, Grodin again locked the door, this time from the inside. "Mrs. Talbert will be kept in a private wing, in a private room, that one there." He gestured at a locked door twenty paces away.

"My concern is--"

"We won't allow her to socialize with the other patients," Grodin continued, "even the ones in this wing. We don't want to impugn her reputation when she returns to public life." The words were spoken with utmost sincerity, and yet the small smile Dengler discerned at the ends of his mouth told him all he needed to know.

"Let me get something for your mouth," Grodin said. "I have a salve on hand."
