*After leaving the State Department, I tweeted that Obama had established a “Qaddafi standard.” If the Libyan leader had lost his legitimacy, so too had Assad. Critics later called Obama’s public call for Assad’s departure a mistake, given the absence of a follow-on implementing policy, but it was consistent with how most Americans view the U.S. role in the world. In hindsight, given the president’s public declaration, the administration should have provided greater direct or indirect support to the Syrian opposition.
