CHAPTER 21

THE DRAGON

Silence. Days. The two merged, mixing and morphing into torturous hours of festering hate. Although I couldn’t find the Sea Serpent guilty of anything, I wasn’t satisfied to sit across from a man I didn’t trust. And I’d be a fool to trust Antonio Barchey.

The dark-haired man was my youngest captain. He was former navy, and deadlier than anyone in his position. Smarter, too. He was not from the US, but France, and although he appeared clean from any sort of suspicious activities, I wouldn’t allow myself not to stay on guard. I couldn’t afford to relax. Not that I’d be able to, even if I did believe the man was truly working. Whether it was his thick accent, the long ponytail he kept messing with, or his attitude that was triggering my temper, I wasn’t sure. Now that I knew I had no reason to kill him, I wanted to be alone. I wanted a moment to think about how my wife was doing. I wanted to stew in my silent fantasies of mutilation and murder for the next person who wasn’t going to be so lucky. My soldiers and Antonio were making it impossible, even if they weren’t directly talking to me.

“Austin Birch? I have no idea where he is. Not out here or anywhere close. At least not that I’ve heard. I don’t understand. What does he have to do with Lisbon?”

“None of your business.” White’s eyes were cut up as he nibbled on crackers. He was still pale, and the sickness was bringing out his temper.

“I keep getting that from all of you. Am I not supposed to know what’s going on? Frankly, I’m fucking confused as hell. You get on my ship. You tear it apart. You grill the hell out of me and my crew. We haven’t done anything wrong. I know I’m a few weeks late, but that’s because I wanted to meet quota first.”

“We’re not here because you’re late,” White said, deepening his tone.

“Then what the hell is this about? Main Master, please.”

“No. You talk to me,” White continued. “Did we announce our arrival before we took over this ship?” At the aggravation growing in Antonio, his stare narrowed even more towards White, but he stayed silent as my soldier kept going. “If we wanted you to know why we’re here, we would offer the information. We haven’t, and we won’t. And correction…this is the Main Master’s ship, not yours. You answer what we ask and stop asking questions.”

The captain’s gaze cut over to mine. I hadn’t said a word up to this point and didn’t want to now, but I had to keep any trust and loyalty this man had to me.

“My wife and our twins were killed.”

“I…” Surprise. Shock. Antonio couldn’t hide them as his gaze lowered.

“You didn’t know.”

“No, Main Master. I’m…sorry. I got the call to come back early, but I didn’t want to show up without my numbers.” His eyes jumped to mine. “Fuck. I’m so damn sorry.
