Chapter 14

All the men were dutifully lined up in the main room, ready for the spotlight. When Mateo walked in, smiles appeared on some of their faces. Not Tre’s, though. No, he scowled and wouldn’t meet Mateo’s gaze. He looked anywhere but forward.

Mateo knew he should’ve done more to make amends but it also seemed like an overreaction on Tre’s part. Maybe he’d been a little cold, but it’s not like he had kicked Tre out of bed. He had a lot on his mind, and he shouldn’t be forced to fake a good mood for someone.

He didn’t even think he wanted a relationship at the moment, especially now after everything that had happened. So, the fact that Tre’s avoidance bothered him so much didn’t make any sense. Did he like him? Was that what this feeling was?

Rahul was the opposite. His warm smile shined brighter than the lanterns hanging around the room. He waved and mouthed “Hi, handsome” just like he’d done at the first red flag ceremony. This time, though, he also blew a kiss. And that stirred something in Mateo. He caught himself smiling back before quickly smoothing out his face.

“Welcome, gentlemen, to our second red flag ceremony,” Sean said. “As a reminder, Mateo has one red flag to give out to someone who he feels exhibited some less than extraordinary behavior this week. After he hands out his flag, Mateo will leave, and Stella and I will give out a second red flag based on our own observations.”

“With that being said,” continued Stella, “this is only week two. Anything could still happen, and you will have many more opportunities to improve your relationship with Mateo. So, now we turn it over to you, Mateo, to hand out the first red flag of the evening.”

His palms were sweaty, and he tried to wipe them discreetly on his suit pants. He was confident about this decision. It wasn’t a hard one to make, but something about standing in front of all these men was more than a little intimidating. The more he got to know them, the harder this became.

“Thank you all again for being here,” Mateo began. “I’ve had a lot of fun with you this week, even though things got wild at one point. I think being here with you through it all helped put me at ease, and I hope I did the same for you. I do have a red flag to hand out tonight and I don’t want to upset anyone. Stella is right that there’s still plenty of time left and anything could happen.” He picked up the flag from the accent table in front of him. He kept it close to his chest, facing the camera, and took a deep, long breath. “Tonight, I’ve decided to give the red flag to someone I feel isn’t here for the right reasons. This person has started some rumors around the house. He’s accused others of sleeping around with the other guys when the person who actually slept around was himself.
