Chapter Seventeen

Ricky had decided it wasn’t a good idea to go back to the building so soon after the homeless man had spoken to Emma. She wasn’t going to complain about that because it meant the mice would get to live for a bit longer, oblivious to the fact that their murderer planned to pop them with little baby bullets or whatever the hell went in those guns. She reckoned he’d probably ask her to shoot some, too, but she was going to do that thing she did where she said she preferred to watch. It got her out of doing so many things.

It was tiring to keep lying. It seemed she lied to everyone in her life now, including Ricky. Because she couldn’t completely be herself with him, she had to watch what she said before she spoke in case it set him off. Her stomach churned sometimes when she wanted to bring something to his attention but worried about his reaction. If someone made you afraid like that, then they weren’t anybody you should be anywhere near, but this stupid hold he had over her, or some kind of magnetism between them, kept drawing her back. She could have lied to him and said her parents had found out where she’d really been that night but she’d ended up falling back into this pattern of meeting up and fucking about.

It had to come to a natural end at some point, didn’t it? She hadn’t allowed herself to completely fall under whatever spell he’d woven, she could see he was an arsehole sometimes. Or a lot of the time. And she was well aware he wasn’t normal in the head. Every so often, he said something really sinister, and she reckoned he knew she contemplated doing a runner.

How stupid that she didn’t when she had a valid excuse right at her fingertips. What did that say about her that she didn’t use that excuse? Why did she hate the way he spoke to her sometimes yet put herself through it every day after school and at weekends? It didn’t make any sense. Maybe it was because meeting Ricky had shown her how boring her life had been before he’d come on the scene. Maybe the thought of going back to having evenings at home or spending them with Amanda was too tedious to imagine. She’d tried to persuade Amanda to come out with her, but she’d said it was boring walking around the streets doing nothing. And she’d had a point, because with Amanda there wouldn’t be anything to do, but with Ricky there was. Amanda would never kick a street sign until it leaned over. She wouldn’t shoot mice.
