After tossing the case containing the used syringe and the empty vial into the cab of the tractor, Reb walked around to the other side of the trench and stood directly in front of Captain Moridi, who looked up at him.

Speaking in Farsi, Reb said, “Welcome to The Farm. This is the situation. You were captured inside the United States after you had crossed the U.S./Mexico border. Illegally, by the way. We’ve already established that you and your buddies are Iranian and that you are Quds Force commandos. When you were captured, you were not wearing your military uniforms. That makes you spies and subject to death by firing squad or any other method I choose. I sent the laptop that was found with you to people who will find out what is on it. It would be easier on you if you tell me what your mission was.”

“You can’t do this to us,” Captain Moridi screamed in English. “We have rights under your laws. Now that we’ve entered your country, we claim amnesty. You must release us to your immigration courts’ jurisdiction. If you don’t release us immediately, you will be breaking the law.”

Reb turned and looked at Billy with a look of disgust on his face. “Please tell me that what he just said isn’t true.”

“Actually,” Billy said, “If he were to be arrested and get in our justice system, then he would have rights. You know how fucked up everything is when it comes to the rights people have these days.”

“Even foreigners who have entered our country illegally and are in all likelihood foreign soldiers out of uniform and therefore are spies?” Reb asked before saying, “Well, I seriously doubt that the founding fathers would agree with it and I damn well know that I don’t.”

“In that case, what we don’t want to happen is for these guys to get arrested and demand to see a lawyer,” Billy said.

“Trust me, that ain’t gonna happen. This is an FBIS operation and we operate by a different set of rules,” Reb replied.

Reb returned his gaze to the heads of the two commandos sticking out of the ground and said, “Now, what I would like is for you to cooperate with me and tell me why you entered the United States. What your mission was. Tell me what I want to know and you will be treated well. Otherwise, it won’t go so well for you.”

The man next to Captain Moridi, Ali Mohamed, looked up at Reb and shouted, “Death to America! Death to Israel!”

The dog—already in an agitated state, brought on by the man’s whimpering and the smell of fear the man was exuding—strained against its leash and began lunging repeatedly at the man in front of him and snapping his teeth.

Captain Moridi looked over at Ali Mohamed in time to see the dog lunge forward just as Ali turned his head to the side and screamed for Allah to save him from the unclean beast.
