FORTY

Opening Ceremony

Yu was having a difficult time preventing her facial expressions from revealing her excitement and nervousness. She also felt awkward about being in the line of eight Fenghuang competitors who were about to march across the city to the Tournament Center, surrounded by the might of their clan. The City Lord’s Palace courtyard was lit by more torches than Yu had ever seen before and was filled with hundreds of clan members, while thousands more waited outside.

In front of Yu were cultivators older, more experienced, and likely stronger than her. Even the twins were a few places in front of her, despite their mediocre talents, because they had still not become strong enough to enter a sect, even though they were two years older than Yu. Based on what she could see of their physique, she thought they must be past the muscle level of the Foundation Building Stage, although their breathing did not show the easy control of those who had strengthened their lungs, suggesting they were still at heart or lungs level. They really were quite average. But that was fine in Yu’s mind – the clan needed average cultivators too.

Yu was a bit sad that Lei couldn’t see her standing in front of her clan as a competitor, but he was at a sect, being both in the Meridian Formation Stage and nearly eighteen.

The other youths that her family had sent were a mixed bunch. A few cousins appeared strong enough to place in the top ten, but Yu knew that it took more than physique to fight. Yu had politely rebuffed every attempt to speak to her, with most trying to figure out who the “new boy” was, and why he was masked. There were rumors going around about the clan having picked up somebody, since Yu had been seen walking freely around the palace in her “young master” wraps. Of course, none of them would even have considered that the muscular and clearly strong young male cultivator was actually the “Young Mistress” who was supposedly too crippled and ill to even attend.

Yu watched the bustle of the courtyard die down as her father, the proud and intimidating Patriarch, rode in on a Horse Lizard, its green and brown scales reflecting the torchlight. He moved to directly in front of the gate, then turned around to face the crowd. Following him were Yu’s uncles Gen and Zhao, and then her father’s first and third wives. Yu’s mother was responsible for leading the competitors so she rode her mount, also a Horse Lizard, to stand in front of the leader of the Fenghuang competitors, her cousin, Fenghuang Yaozu.

He was the boy whom Yu had knocked out in the barn the night before she had been healed. Apparently that experience had been good for him, because it appeared he had worked incredibly hard afterwards. He looked strong, confident, and mature. He even had a little dark facial hair.

Yu guessed that her knocking him unconscious had likely shamed him to the point of having to prove that he would not easily lose face like that again.
