Three Months Later

I had never felt such like a place of belonging than here at Draererth's Academy of Spells and Wizardry. Not in this life nor in my former life. My friendships with Walter, Yves, Agnes, and Cecily became one of the most important things in my life. I treasured the time we spent together. We were like our own family.

Over the passing months, I had learned an absorbent amount of magic. I could cast fire bolts and rays of frost in my sleep. I practiced magic every day, and Hamon was my mentor, instructing my practice sessions. He also became a trusted friend. Hamon had given free rein to delve into the magic I would like to specialize in, however, I was uncertain which type of magic that would be.

Although I am becoming very accomplished in my magic practice, the spells I know and can do well, everyone knows. Walter, Agnes, Yves, and Cecily have all mastered the spells and magic I can perform. I do not seem to have any advantage over any of my friends or peers at Draererth's.

I had memorized all the books that Hamon and I gained on my second day at school. We made another trip to the library, where I got another book that seemed interesting, Ancient Rune Magic. I studied that book at my desk, when Hamon entered our living quarters, "Ed, I've been thinking."

"What about?" I asked.

"You have learned a great deal of magic at such a quick pace, I've been thinking we need to enroll you into the Ethics of Magic course," answered Hamon.

"I thought course was for second- and third-year students," I replied.

"It may not seem like it based on the spells you have cast so far, but you are an advanced student," Hamon explained.

"I thought you were teaching me ethics as I went," I argued.

"Well, yes. I've been teaching you magical ethics as you have learned new spells, but I can only teach you so much. The minimal I have taught you have only been to keep you on the straight and narrow until you I could enroll you into this course. It is half-way through the semester, and I can get you in," Hamon replied.

"I'm not sure of taking a class with older students," I verbalized what had bothered me.

"Taking classes with older students will only enhance your abilities. It will expose you to students who have honed their skills. Also, the older students gain experience by showing you what they know. It's a win-win for both!"

"I suppose that is all right, I will trust you," I relented.

"I believe one of your campions will also be enrolled in that course based on her advance demonstration of the spells, I believe her name is Yves Caimie," Hamon said.

"Oh, Yves! That's fantastic. We have most of our classes together already, I'm glad she will be in this one," I exclaimed.

The following day, I went to my new class for the first time with Yves. Yves and I walked to class after we finished lunch with the usual gang.
