My brain still buzzes with all of the information of the past few hours. Midday has come and gone with a hastily eaten meal, a flurry of cross-continental communication, and an emerging migraine reminiscent of the days on Earth I would spend in video conferencing from morning to night. Not something I expected here in Sirethan.

Even so, on Earth I took global communications for granted, the magic we made of metal and crystal and electricity, of the technology to send satellites to orbit the planet and bounce signals from Scotland to New Zealand in milliseconds.

Here in Sirethan, it really is magic, and despite the burgeoning pain in my head, the marvel of it still feels magnificent.

I make my way slowly back to the house where we’ve set up our personal rooms. Tomorrow, we will return to Viathan, but tonight—tonight we celebrate.

First, though, I’m going to take a nap.

Already I can hear the bustle of people in the distance gathering foodstuffs and drinks for the evening’s feast. From what I understand, there’s a wary truce between our occupying force and the remaining townsfolk in Lithriathan, at least insofar as commerce goes. I’ve been living off travel rations, and I’m more than ready to eat a proper hot meal that isn’t porridge.

The biggest advantage we have right now is warning if the One God makes a move. Sasun will have to be dragged out of that tower by her toes, I think, because now that she can liaise with her eyes and ears in real time no matter where in Sirethan they are, she’s in a feverish state of constant action. I suspect she’s been waiting for this moment ever since she heard it was a possibility. Sasun is the type to prepare for every contingency, even the good ones.

I reach the wide stairs that lead off the main path to the house and stop short when I see who’s standing in the courtyard.

“Hello, Lithrial,” Dar says.

Immediately wary, I can’t reach for my staff without making it look like I’m going to attack, so I settle for relaxing into my mana awareness, my mostly bare feet on the stone alert to any vibrations that could signal the burly human guards flanking the elemental are about to make a move.

“Hello,” I answer after a pause.

I’m not sure how elementals quantify their ascension—every one of Sirethan’s peoples have their own system of understanding and conceptualising power—but the one thing I feel certain about is that Dar is not on my level.

The more experience I gain, the more I listen to my mana, the more I can sense my relative power compared to others’, and with Dar’s gazepuller abilities, I need every advantage I can get if she tries to put the whammy on me.

When no one says anything for another long moment, I grow impatient. “What are you doing here? I won’t bother asking how you got in, but you have to understand that knowing you likely used the equivalent of mind control on our people to do so does not help the levels of trust.
