Chapter Twenty

The next day, we were walking through the forest when Duncan veered close to me and grabbed my arm. “Do you hear that?” he asked, his lips barely moving.

For long seconds, the two of us paused, listening to the usual quiet of the forest; a faint flutter of the leaves high above, the gentle hum of the breeze through the long emerald-green grass. We stood there long enough that he released his death grip on my arm and shrugged apologetically.

Then I heard it too: a rustling in the trees above that reminded me of when the creepers had dropped down from the trees above. A heavy feeling ran down my spine, as if one of them were about to land on my head and shoulders again.

The rustling suddenly grew louder as something raced down the tree in front of us, a big green blur that still almost blended in with the trees, and then a tree cat pounced in front of us.

Duncan swore and drew his sword, but I was already dropping to my knees. “Hello, friend!”

The tree cat butted her broad face against mine.

Duncan watched for a few long moments as the cat and I reacquainted ourselves with each other, then reluctantly sheathed his sword. “I’d almost rather be eaten than listen to you croon and baby-talk.”

I flashed Duncan a smile. “That can be arranged, if you can’t respect the woman-feline bond.”

He shook his head, although he couldn’t hide his faint smile. “You’ve always had a way with animals. But then, you summer court types always do.”

The cat trailed us all afternoon, staying in the trees above. It disappeared for a while and returned with traces of blood around its mouth, but I still told him how pretty he was.

A few hours into the morning, we stopped on the hill above a village. We needed horses for our ride, but I wouldn’t mind a meal and a bath either.

“Can you keep the princess hidden?” Duncan asked Calina. He didn’t even pretend to include me in the conversation.

“I imagine Faer will have a warrant out for you as well, Duncan.” Calina’s smile touched her lips. “For all of us. There’s no point in hiding. We’ll have to trust the villagers.”

Where one of us went, Faer would know the others were following. The thought of the danger I was putting these people in hurt my heart. But I didn’t think I’d be successful in pushing Calina and the others away, either.

“Trust is not Duncan’s strong-point,” I sing-songed cheerfully.

Duncan glared at me over his meaty shoulder, although the glare seemed half-hearted. “Perhaps I just hoped for an hour’s break from you.”

“You adore me,” I said lightly.

The half-dozen Fae knights, Duncan and I loped down into the village.

Calina fell in beside me. She rested her hand lightly on the pommel of her sword, steadying it as we half-slid down the steep hill toward the tidy white village below. “I swear, he talks more around you than I’ve ever seen before.”

I scoffed, although her words lit warmth in my chest.
