EMORY

“Here we are,” Sebastian said, parking his car outside the county jail. “I’ll be waiting for you to get back.”

“Thank you,” I said, giving him a grateful smile.

“No problem. Tell my brother I said hi. I already told him that Dad forbade me to visit him.”

Nodding, I stepped out of the car. “Will do.”

Holding my head high, I walked to the entrance, signed in, and was escorted to the visitation room. A free table waited in the middle between other inmates and their visitors.

I felt my body tense as if I was the inmate. This place gave off bad vibes. I sat there waiting and minutes turned into half an hour. I bit my lower lip, anxiousness filtering through me like spiders crawling up my back. I looked at the door every other second. What was taking so long? Visitation hours would soon be over.

Relief settled on my chest when the door creaked open and a familiar face was led in by a corrections officer in blue. River’s hair was a mess, not styled like usual, but those familiar strands framed his face. He held his hands in front of him, handcuffs binding them together. A chain went down to another set of chains around his ankles. River wore a scowl almost as good as he wore the orange prison uniform.

I went for his hands, grabbing them over the table, but immediately, I was shot down.

“No touching!” an officer on stand-by barked.

River sent me an apologetic smile as he pulled his hands away and resting them under the table instead.

“Why didn’t they uncuff you?” I asked, frowning.

River chuckled. “I’m charged with three first-degree murders and one attempted murder. I guess you could say they don’t trust me.” I knew that—it was the same reason they denied him bail yesterday.

Again, my eyes darted to his bruised eye. “Who did that to you?”

River sucked his teeth for a moment. “No one. Someone random.” A harsh chuckle came from him. “Said it was a message for my father, and that I should take it very personally.”

“Are you okay?”

River shrugged, the cold mask perfectly in place. I hated to see him like that. Looking thoughtful, he reached up with his cuffed hands to touch by the little cut below his eye. “Son of a bitch took the effort to use brass knuckles,” he said dryly as an explanation to the cut. “At least orange suits me.”

I chuckled at that, because only he could be worried about looks and joke around in a moment like this. But then, reality hit me and I averted my gaze. If I didn’t do
