Chapter Thirteen
Liam locked the doors and slammed down the gas pedal. Tires squealing, the van shot toward the dock-area exit. When he slowed to turn onto a road, a woman grabbed the driverâs door handle and held on. Her muffled scream penetrated. âHelp! Let me come with you!â
A running man bumped into her and tore her away from the van. As Liam drove on, shifting lanes to dodge people, he looked at me in his rearview mirror. âI donât think the bullet hit the bone. More than just a flesh wound, though. It likely tore some muscle tissue. Youâll definitely need stitches.â
I settled in a cross-legged position with my back to the vanâs front bench. The guard lay face up, his feet in front of my knees and his head near the rear door. Saigon sat at his left and Shanghai at his right. âI guess I could go to Dr. Rubenstein,â I said, âbut could I get there without bounty hunters chasing me?â
Liam shook his head. âI think not. Even the doctor might turn you in.â
Saigon touched my knee. âI can stitch you up.â
I gave her a skeptical look. âWith your sewing kit?â
âDonât worry. Iâve done quite a bit of Reaper-skin mending in my time, including my own leg once and my arm twice. Iâm not a bad stitcher, if I do say so myself.â
I nodded. âSure. Thanks.â
âI have a first-aid kit under the seat,â Liam said. âNo pain-killers in it, of course, but you can use whateverâs there. Got some bandages, I think. Maybe some alcohol.â
âThatâll help.â I looked under the bench, found a white metal box, and slid it next to my hip. âJust get us out of downtown. Once youâre clear, let me know. Then weâll decide what to do next.â
âI will.â
I nodded at the guard. âHow is he?â
âDead,â Saigon said. âI didnât mean to kill him. The elbow slam crushed his throat. Maybe broke his neck. I guess I got carried away.â
I sighed. Another senseless death. Although I thoroughly warned him, guilt still weighed me down. âDo you mind reaping him?â
âNo problem. If your bullet hole can wait.â
I glanced at the wound. Blood still oozed but not too badly. The throbbing, however, sent pulses of pain to my fingers and shoulder. âI think itâs okay.â
âAll right. Iâll just ââ
âLetâs do it together,â Shanghai said. âI need to teach Phoenix how to collect a ghost without valve energy. You pull him out, and while youâre stitching, Iâll put him in my cloak.â
Saigon blinked at her. âYou can do that?â
âI think so. At least I did it when I practiced with a ghost named Crandyke. Tokyo taught me.â
âAll right. Letâs give it a try.â Saigon pulled her sleeve over her hand and covered the guardâs eyes. Seconds later, the sleeve flattened. She whispered, âTake it easy. You can trust me. ⦠Whatâs your name? ⦠Okay, Knox, just relax and let go. ⦠I know. The darkness is scary, but Iâll take care of you. ⦠Yes, Iâm a Reaper.
