Chapter 11

Reaper waited as the conference call connected to all the players. He poured another cup of coffee and wished like hell he was out of Cannes and in Paris. He had no doubt that someone from Guardian was watching Harmony, but unless he knew the operative, he'd question their techniques. Hell, even if he knew who was watching her, unless he was there and able to respond on a moment's notice, he wouldn't be happy. He took a sip of his coffee and shrugged. That was a lie. As long as she was involved in this mess, he wouldn't be happy.

"Archangel online." The familiar growly voice broke the silence.

"All parties online, sir. Operator Two-Seven-Four is clear."

"CCS, give us a rundown on what you've found."

"The video at the auction was enlightening, although it wasn't run like a typical auction. We do believe there were purchases made, just not the art," the woman spoke rapidly.

"Explain that," Archangel fired off.

"Well, money in the amounts indicated by the auctioneer was routed to shell company number thirty-five. We are in the process of reverse engineering where it came from, but that's as easy as finding a needle in a haystack. Unless I have unlimited access to over a thousand banks, transfer wires, and internet companies, it is almost impossible. Believe me, it is a lot easier to follow the money than retrace it."

"You said almost impossible," Fury pointed out.

"I did. I'm good. Screw it, I'm better than good, but it is going to take time and manpower. I'm assigning everyone I have that isn't currently active on other cases, so some of HR's low-priority hiring background requests are going to have to wait. I'd appreciate someone informing them of that fact."

He heard Archangel chuckle. "I'm on it. Make this happen for us."

"I'm working it. In the meantime, I've been able to identify a handful of the players from the video we received of the auction. Kudos to whoever was wearing the glasses. They got us just about every face, and they were the reason we were able to identify the dollar amounts spoken by the auctioneer and routed to the offshore account."

"There's no audio on the video." Reaper frowned as he stated the obvious.

"Lip reading." Bengal's wife filled in the gap in his understanding. "I've sent the names to the section heads via interoffice memo. The reason any of these people would be at an art auction is questionable. We have three generals of rogue nations, one right-hand man of a country on the brink of civil war, and another who we have very loosely linked to the IOU."

Reaper sagged back in his chair. The new kid on the block was the IOU, a terrorist group rumored to be gathering weapons and recruiting for a massive attack. Every intelligence agency in the world was trying to figure out what the group was up to and who it was targeting, but as of yet, it was just a rumor like Stratus and the Fates, only no one questioned the possibility that the IOU actually existed.
