I won a few local competitions, then one of the Olympic coaches spotted me, so I went on to bigger and brighter competitions. I took that as far as I could and for the last three years I’ve had Craig as my manager and I’ve been skating professionally.”

“I’ve watched you. I saw your performance before the dinner that night. You become a part of the ice when you skate. I could tell you love it.”

“Yes, I do. I don’t know what I’d do if I couldn’t skate.” She looked up at him. “But then, with each of your sculptures, you leave a part of yourself in the ice—in your creations, don’t you? Doesn’t it bother you to know they melt away in a matter of a few hours?”

He was silent for a long moment. “The things that give us joy aren’t meant to last forever. I don’t look to create a memory of me in the ice—they are a moment of beauty to be enjoyed and remembered—not to be revisited. Someone a hundred years from now can’t understand the needs of the artist who created a painting, or a sculpture crafted today. The emotions of the moment. One cannot truly own art—it is a translation of emotion on canvas, in clay, or whatever the artist chooses to use to express.”

She looked at him with new eyes. He wasn’t some distant, unfeeling god. There was so much depth in his words.

She set down her cup and moved towards him—drawn to him. She understood him. On her knees she faced him and cupped his jaw with her hands. They stared at each other for long moments.

“Make love to me, Khristos DuMichael. God, you set me afire with your passion. Even if it’s only for tonight, I want to share your fire.”

He didn't wait for a second offer. He cupped her head and crashed his mouth over hers. And as he did that night long ago, he pulled her wild desire to the surface where he could sup from it at his leisure.
