“Time to go, children,” Cathan said in a melodic tone that made me want to rip his throat out. “I can explain everything.”

I stood unmoving. There was nothing left to explain. The bloody bastard took our friends, he took Savannah, and I would not sit by and let that happen. My fists tightened at my side and I saw red.

Somewhere close to me, Billie’s teeth chattered as she struggled to regain her composure. I couldn’t even imagine what my sister was going through. Savannah was, well, I wasn’t sure what to me, but River was her mate. Seeing him dragged away unconscious must have unraveled Billie in ways I could never understand.

Her magic swarmed over her body, shadows rising higher on her ankles while a raging fire at her fingertips battled the wind she commanded from above. My feet stumbled as the floor shook beneath us, and Billie’s face reddened while she continued to lose control. If I thought I was losing the plot, she was definitely too far gone to bring back.

Swiftly, my sister swung around and blasted her magic at Cathan. With a snarl, she directed the wind at his feet, knocking him backward until the plonker wobbled like a pendulum. The king shook his head, a look of sheer frustration coating his features. He flicked his wrists, and in a flash, Billie’s magic vanished without a trace.

“I’LL KILL YOU!” she shrieked and ran at him like a bull.

The few guards that stayed to keep us in line started for her, but Cathan waved them off. His arms shot out and a current of dark shadows swarmed around Billie, locking her in place. She snapped her teeth, cursing through a clenched jaw as she all but foamed at the mouth. On her arms and chest, the mate marks darkened into an inky mess, and from where I stood like a sodding fool, it looked as though they covered her entirely. Her neck rolled, head jerking side to side as she worked to free herself from Cathan’s hold.

It didn’t work.

Whatever fae magic Cathan possessed, it was so much stronger than Billie’s. Stronger than both of ours combined, if I was willing to wager. What was it the king said about our magic? That it was a piece of him? How many pieces did the bastard have left to make him this formidable?

My mind raced, images of Savannah’s fear-filled face flashing before me. Even in those last moments, she continued to fight. When the fae guard knocked her out with his spear, my entire being shattered. As he carried her away, I memorized every inch of his body, a photograph in my mind of the man I knew I would kill before the sun rose.

My eyes slitted, head swiveling to see the king better. With his power on full display, it became clear we could not fight our way out of this. Not with only the two of us. Even if Cathan wasn’t controlling Billie the way he was, we were still surrounded by guards.
