Chapter 8 There had been a message on my machine from Ginger, but I'd come home too late to return her call. Her faded voice had said she was home safe and sound, and heading off to sleep the sleep of the all skied out. I phoned at breakfast time, sitting at my kitchen table sipping coffee and nibbling a poppy seed Danish, liberated from my freezer and nuked. Should I tell her that the police had found her birthday card to Judd and were hunting for his lover? How could I do that without breaking trust with Steve? I surveyed the watery green world outside the window but it failed to provide inspiration. "The weekend was a good idea," she said. "At least I exhausted myself sufficiently so I could sleep. But, Dace, I feel like I'm on hold. I'm waiting for the mail. If a letter comes, then I'll know what happened and I can start dealing with it. If no letter comes, then I'm convinced Judd didn't kill himself. I'll have to do something. I guess I'll have to go to the police, or tell them the whole story if they come to me, even if it brings my career down in flames. I can't let his killer go free. I _won't_ let his killer go free. It doesn't matter what happens to me." "Yes, it does -- of course, it does." And I was desperately afraid that her career might come crashing down around her if news of her relationship with Judd became public. "Ginger, I, uh, got Bates to beg a favor from a friend of his in the police department. It seems that the police aren't ready to buy that it was suicide and they're investigating it very carefully. I don't know that you can achieve anything more by talking to them. It's not like you have any idea who might have done it. Why don't you give it a bit more time and see what happens? Don't put your career in jeopardy for no good reason." "Oh, Dace, I just don't know what to think. Right now we've both got to rush off to work but I'd really like to talk to you some more about this. Could we get together tonight?" "I can't tonight." I debated whether to tell her what I was doing, perhaps even invite her. I debated for a whole second before saying, "I'm sorry, Ginger, but it's not something I can change." "Oh, I wouldn't want you to do that. But what about lunch tomorrow? I've got a big gap around the lunch hour because usually I do my paperwork on Tuesdays, so I could come out your way. I'll buy you lunch at Star Anise." "You're trying to bribe me. And it works." After Ginger I called Jen. "I'm just on my way out the door," she said, "but I did get your phone message and of course I won't tell Ginger Evason about the Nelson woman being your client.
