In my latest dream,

instead of having sex, we blow up buildings.

We take long walks down dusk-smudged streets, looking

like any other pair of lovers, sighing

up at the brownstones, the children’s hospital:

This one? Oh, yes, that one. We carry a little

map and a red wax pencil with us

to remember. We return under cover

of night, press our dynamite

deep into the cracked walls. The cable snakes

behind us like the black, glistering wake

of a bad gondola. I’m in smart taffeta

and a veil, with a garnet cocktail ring

you cover like an eclipse

as you place your hand over mine

on the plunger. Later you’ll gather me

a bouquet of rebar and brickdust,

a solemn snow of ex-phonebooks

and collection notices whitening the air.

But first, I count backwards

with the most incendiary words I know,

watch smoke trickle like lovescript

from your nose and ears.
