Listen actively for the facts (Prov. 18:5): The listener is pictured not passively but actively listening to acquire knowledge by seeking it.
The data needed to give an appropriate answer do not come from listening to stream-of-consciousness talk structured by the counselee, but to talk elicited by and structured by the counselor.
The counselor must control the flow of talk. He seeks and finds data he is looking for as well as those data that the counselee wishes to offer.
He is prudent and wise in the way in which he conducts the data-gathering sessions. He knows what to ask, when to ask it, and how to word his questions.
