Malcolm continued to pace the reception area, waiting for Boyd to finish his phone call before rushing into his office.

“All right Malcolm,” his boss finally beckoned from his doorway.

“Thanks, man.” he strolled in, nervously looking around the room to see if anything had changed since the last time he’d stopped by.

“So, what’s the big emergency,” Boyd leaned back in his chair, feet resting comfortably on a side drawer of his desk.

“Well, we were supposed to get paid today, right?”

“Right. Day after filming.”

“But we didn’t.”

“That’s right, too. Cuz we didn’t finish the film.”

“Well,” Malcolm stretched his arms over his head as if stalling for time. “I uh… I uh… I have commitments,” he suddenly blurted out as if revealing some deep dark secret.

“We all do.”

“No, you don’t understand.” He leaned forward in his chair as if their close proximity would somehow lend creditability to his argument. “I have… commitments,” he heavily stressed the word.

Boyd wasn’t insensitive to the financial heat that his actor’s were subjected to when they weren’t paid on schedule, but if Malcolm wanted an advance, he was going to have to climb down off his high horse and ask for it.

“What kind of commitments?”

“You know,” he waved his hand as if swatting an errant fly. “Commitments.”

“No, I don’t know,” Boyd just smiled and shook his head, still a little pissed about the way his star had reacted to Lillian’s woman problems during their Friday shoot. “Will a hundred bucks help?” he reached into his pocket and threw two fifty dollar bills down onto his desk.

“Fuck man, I need at least a thousand.”

“A thousand? What for?” Boyd demanded, as if it was really any of his business.

Malcolm stood up and quickly closed the office door. “You know I’m still paying for my plugs and the lipo. Well, I’m already two months behind. If I don’t give the guys at least five bills, they’re gonna come looking for me. You know, looking… for me!” he nervously stressed.

“You really think a couple of plastic surgeons are gonna kick your ass over a late bill?”

“No, but their goons sure as fuck will. How you think they collect? With a mean letter or a nasty phone call?”

He’d heard enough, so before Malcolm bored him with any further details, he pulled open his top drawer and took out a large company checkbook. “I can’t give you the whole thousand bucks, cuz our petty cash account is only set up for a thousand and I’m already holding a check for Lillian’s advance.”

“Pocahontas?” he yelled. “She fucking killed the shoot. Why the hell you wanna advance that bitch?”

“She got her period, man,” he reminded his actor. “She didn’t come in hung-over and throw up all over her co-star. She didn’t forget we were shooting and fly off to Vegas. She didn’t…”

“Fine, I’ll take the five bills,” he finally conceded, knowing full well that his boss was alluding to a couple of his antics from the early days. “But she could have warned me. You know how much I hate blood,” he shivered at the thought.
