“CURSES?” JONI POPPED the Cheetos bag open, folded back the edges, and placed it between them.

“I’ve been having the strangest dreams since meeting Asher.” Tes explained each snippet she’d experienced. “Then Mrs. Wallen pranced around in her after-death state saying ‘Roses are red, violets are blue. Don’t say I love you, until you say I do’.”

“Damn, that’s some deep stuff. Let me consult with Mambo Janetta. She’s a wise woman from the other side. She’ll know what it means and, if there’s a curse, how to get rid of it.”

“I think it’s pretty obvious, don’t you? I can’t say those three little words to Asher.” Tes closed her eyes for a moment. “How can I miss a guy I hardly know?”

“He’s your soulmate.”

“I don’t believe in soulmates.”

Joni crunched a Cheeto. “You have more contradictions in one person than I’ve ever met.”

“I suppose that’s true.”

Joni licked her Cheetos-covered fingertips. “I can help you learn to control the energy bursts.”

“How?”

“It sounds like you go all-in instead of increasing it in increments.”

Tes thought a moment. “I think I’ve only used it when shit hits the fan. You know, when dead people walk around when they shouldn’t.”

“Yeah, I totally get what you mean.” Joni laughed. “I had to practice a lot with my telekinetic abilities.”

“Your what?”

“Moving things with my mind. At first, I’d cause full-scale earthquakes even when I wanted to move something like a spoon. It took time to understand how much energy to expend. It was hard to focus at first, but it became easier the more I did it. Next time—”

“Oh, there won’t be a next time.” Tes waved off the thought.

“There’s going to be a next time. Think about it. You could save someone’s life. What if someone had a heart attack and there weren’t any defibrillator paddles nearby? You could restart their heart.”

“They’d have to be totally flat-lined first. It’s dangerous to restart a heart that doesn’t need it.”

Joni rolled her eyes. “Yeah, whatever. You’re a doctor. You’d know when. Trust your training.” She paused. “Trust your gut.”

A knock sounded at the door. “That’s probably Zeke. He dropped me off. Did I mention I don’t drive?”

“Really?” Tes rose from the bed and opened the door. “Asher,” she choked, shocked he stood there in person. Her hand clutched the doorknob like a lifeline.

He hung back by the rickety wrought iron railing. He looked like hell. His cheeks were sunken and dark smudges surrounded his eyes. “Hi, Tes.”

She tried to swallow the sudden tightness in her throat and coughed. “Do you want to come in? Joni’s here.”

Ruthie shoved past her and jumped on Asher, licking his face, tail wagging a million miles per hour. He petted her and hugged her close. Tes wanted those arms around her.

“Ruthie, down.” She gazed into Asher’s sad eyes. “She’s not supposed to jump on people.”

He continued stroking Ruthie’s back, digging his fingers through her hair. “You haven’t returned my calls, so I thought I’d take a more direct approach.”

Nothing like twisting the knife. “Asher—”

Ruthie licked
