Colonel Cantwell served in the Battle of Vittorio Veneto, 24 October to 3 November 1918. This battle, a response to the devastating losses at Caporetto, was the great triumph for the Italians in World War I.

This map of Venice appeared in the 1909 edition of Baedeker’s Italy, which Hemingway owned. In chapter 12, Colonel Cantwell criticizes a fellow American, the “pitted compatriot,” for relying on Baedeker. As with most Hemingway heroes, Cantwell distinguishes between traveling like a tourist and enjoying the authentic experience.
