The Guidestones

“It’s okay, kiddo. Let me take a look. Look at the other side of the tent for me, alright?”

Todd nodded and turned his tear-streaked face to the side, grinding his teeth to bite off a scream as the soldier pulled up the sheet to expose the injury. A splint and dressings had been applied with obvious skill, but the boy’s lower leg was still swollen to twice its normal size and hanging at an unnatural angle, pocked with lacerations where the bone had speared through the skin in at least four different places.

Seng could hear the low gasps of the others in the tent, but his own face remained expressionless, kind even, as he examined the ruined limb. “Well, I think I can fix that up for you,” he said, tousling Todd’s hair with a slight grin. “I’m going to get you something to make you feel better first though. I’ll be right back.” He winked at the writhing boy, who finally managed a brave smile through the sweat and snot smearing his face, then threw a curt ‘follow me’ nod to the small group gathered inside the tent.

“I’ll stay here with Todd,” Lilly signed to Bo, who gave her a thumbs up before following Pepper, Seng and the others outside.

“Can you really fix his leg?” Pepper asked after they had moved a few dozen feet away from the tent.

“No, ma’am. Leg’s coming off,” Seng said with a matter-of-factness that left the onlookers stunned. “Gonna run back to the rig and grab the rest of my supplies, give him a hit of ketamine, then we’ll TQ that leg and amputate just above the break. I’ve got enough IV antibiotics to–”

Bo cut him off mid-sentence. “–We’re not taking his leg off.”

Seng eyes narrowed almost imperceptibly. “We aren’t taking off his leg, sir. I am. That’s a nasty break with tissue and nerve damage we can’t even see yet. I know you did the best you could with what you had to clean it, but I bet it’s packed full of mud, sand, and who knows what else. I can smell it…it’s not infected yet, but it’s not clean enough. At this point If we dropped him off at a trauma center in Atlanta an amputation wouldn’t be off the table, and it’s the only option we’ve got out here. No way can I make sure it’s clean enough to keep from getting re-infected if we try to reduce it and close it up. It wouldn’t heal right, even if we could.”

“You said you had antibiotics, right?” Bo snapped. “So we reopen the leg, rinse it out with as much clean water as we can find, reset the bones, then sew it up and hit him with a cruiser-load of vancomycin or Keflex, or whatever else you have in your bag of tricks. Kid doesn’t need to lose his leg. I used to work with veterinarians for zark's sake–I’ve seen dogs treated for breaks worse than that without a damn amputation.”
