Reading gives delight, information, stimulation, and ability. The wise crave it, the superficial discourage it, and the stupid neglect it.

Amazingly enough, in the first chapter, mention was made of a man named Bill Durney, who just happened to be the general manager of our minor-league team in Miami at that time. Durney had been an associate of Bill Veeck’s in St. Louis—a close friend! When that season ended, I said to Bill Durney, “More than anything in the world, I would like to meet Bill Veeck.” At that time, Veeck was living in retirement in Easton, Maryland, about two hours from my home in Wilmington, Delaware. Through Bill Durney’s friendship, I was able to go to Bill Veeck’s estate in September of that year. Like a starstruck kid, I spent five hours with him—five hours that developed into a twenty-five-year friendship and mentorship. And it all started with that book—Veeck as in Wreck.
I still have that book, by the way. I couldn’t tell you where Pop Warner’s Book for Boys is, but I know exactly where Veeck as in Wreck is. I looked at the price tag the other day: $3.95—for a 400-page-plus hardcover book! And, by the way, Bill Veeck’s signature was in the front of the book when I bought it.
My point is, you never know who you’ll meet when you pick up a book. You may just spend a few hours in another person’s mind, or you may make a friend for life—someone who’ll literally change your life. But if you never pick up the book, you could be missing the adventure of a lifetime.
