Chapter 6
Itâs Sunday, Jeremiah thought to himself as he stepped into the lobby of the empty building in downtown Male Order. No one went to work on a Sunday, especially not here in the laid-back oasis of Male Order. Unfortunately, this case didnât care what day of the week it was.
Jeremiah stepped out of the elevator and into the lobby of Burke Pierce Energy. The receptionistâs desk was empty, but the soft sounds of conversation emanated from within the office. He headed past the reception area to the black and grey marble interior of the Burke Pierce offices. No cubicles divided the spaceâpart of the companyâs devotion to open business practicesâand all offices were only walled off with glass and steel.
Men in suits filled the conference room at the far end of the floor. As Jeremiah approached, their voices grew louder. He saw they were gathered around an open laptop with footage of a cable news channel playing filling the screen.
âMr. Burke, other Mr. Burke, Dad.â Jeremiah nodded to Tristanâs father, Tristan, and his own father respectively. Along with Jeremiah, they were the heads of the Burke Pierce empire. Tristan and Jeremiahâs fathers, Harrison Burke and Isaac Pierce, were only figureheads now, but they still took an active interest in the company and advised their sons on a regular basis.
âYou have to see this,â Isaac said to his son. He took off his wire-rimmed glasses and pinched the bridge of his nose, clearly frustrated.
Tristan, uncharacteristically dressed in a designer suit, pushed a key on the computer and the news channel popped back up.
âWith us today is Texas candidate for Lieutenant Governor, Representative Joey Johnston, to discuss the recent accident on the Burke Pierce Energy drilling site in East Texas,â the reporter said on the news channel as a satellite image of Joey Johnston flashed on the screen. The bushy-haired man gave the camera a toothy grin and pointed to his âJoeyâs Just Jolly for Texasâ campaign button.
âGreat to be here, Leslie, real great.â
âRepresentative, one of the key promises in your campaign is that you will create new jobs for Texans, and you have cited Burke Pierce as one of the worst offenders in Texas job loss.â
âYes, Leslie. They donât care one bit about Texans, and thatâs obvious from that accident.â
âBut how does this play intoââ
âYou know what shot off? Do you know what? Their blast preventer, one of the most important safety elements on a drilling rig. George Herndon, the man who nearly lost his life, God bless him, has just been neglected by the company.â
âHow so?â
âYou know theyâre taking this to court? Forcing that poor, hard-working Texan to pay those lawyers. Theyâre trying to suck every penny out of him, and meanwhile, he canât work. He canât support himself, he canâtââ
âRepresentative, I understand your anger, but the company has issued several statements declaring thatââ
âYou trust them?â Representative Johnstonâs eyes widened, showing the whites around them, and he began wildly gesticulating. âThose bunch of lying, yellow-belly tea-sippers are just lying to you all.
