Chapter 9

Throughout the remaining days of Cabell's break from Moreau and Coquille, he took every opportunity to spend time with David. Indeed, he virtually moved into the tiny apartment above the bookshop during his last week in his hometown.

Part of him questioned the nature of his relationship with David. Was he in love? Could this man become a true partner in his life?

Just when he was about to answer these questions, he shied away from them. Frankly, they confused him. He told himself not to spend time reflecting on them. After all, he'd returned home to take a break from his hectic life in New York City, to try to put that life into perspective...not confuse matters by adding a whole new layer to the complicated tangle his life had become.

All he knew was that while he was in Patuxent Heights, he was enjoying the delightful companionship of David. And that was all it was--a delicious interlude. Besides, it wasn't as if he and David had committed to each other.

In the early evening of the last night before he returned to New York, he descended the stairs in his childhood home, a whistle on his lips and a high school yearbook in his hands. He'd just found the tome stuck at the back of an upper shelf when he was rummaging through his closet as he packed. On a whim, he'd picked it up and decided to take it with him as he went out for his final evening in his hometown. For some reason, he wanted to share it with David.

As he rounded the corner on the landing, he collided with his father, who was coming up the stairs with a load of laundry in his arms.

Freshly washed sheets and towels flew in all directions, blanketing the landing and steps.

"Oh, geesh, Dad. I'm sorry. I wasn't paying attention to where I was going." Cabell set down the book and began helping his father collect the linens.

Perry Scott flashed a smile. "No problem. You seem a bit distracted."

Cabell paused and turned to look at his father. "I guess." He stared into his father's eyes, seeing kindness in them, and a hint of something else Cabell couldn't identify."

"Give me a hand with this laundry, will you?"

"Sure thing." Cabell turned and followed his father up to the linen closet on the second floor of their home.

"So, are you ready for your flight tomorrow morning?"

"Yup. I'm mostly packed."

"And...did you accomplish what you wanted to during this month at home?" Perry placed towels at one end of a closet shelf.

Cabell added a few more to the pile. "That's a damn good question, Dad."

"Does it have an answer?"

Cabell handed his father the sheet sets he'd just folded and sighed. "You know I've been spending a lot of time with David."

Perry smiled wryly. "I noticed." He closed the linen closet door.

Cabell felt his face flush. "I guess I haven't been around very much, have I?"

"That's okay, son. I certainly understood."

"I really like him, Dad. Everything's so easy when I'm around him.
