Chapter 17

Steward Hayden Lee wanted only the best for his son. After all, he was his only son, and while the man knew how to choose a lovely woman, as his father, he wanted more. He expected more from a woman for his son.

Not that horrid preacher’s daughter. The girl was stunning and she could sing like an angel, but she didn’t have a dowry or social status or anything else that his son needed.

It was time to consider finding a woman on his own. But who?

Martin Davis had a beautiful daughter named Helen. A blonde with blue eyes and a shapely figure. Her father a banker, she must surely come with a dowry, not that they needed her money, but her standing in society would be good for his son.

Steward walked out of his home and down the street to the bank. Maybe it was time the two of them had a chat about their children.

As he entered the building, he couldn’t help but smile. The bank was nothing compared to his office for the railroad.

A few moments later, he was sitting in a comfortable chair in front of Martin.

“Are you needing a loan,” Martin said to him with a grin, knowing that he did not need the bank's money.

“No, I’m needing a wife for my son,” he told the man whose brows rose, a grin spreading across his face.

“And my daughter needs a husband,” he said. “That girl spends way too much time with Nellie Robinson, the mayor's daughter."

This sounded good.

“Your daughter, I think, would be perfect for my son. Currently he’s involved with a woman who is beautiful but not for him.”

The bank manager grinned. “How can we introduce the two of them?”

“How about tomorrow night at dinner at the Griffin Hotel? I’ll insist that my son attend and tell him it’s a business engagement. Which it could be,” Steward said with a smile.

“And I’ll insist that Helen attend dinner with me,” he said.

The two men stood and shook hands.

“Let’s hope this works out for us both,” he said.

“Yes, to a husband for my daughter and a wife for your son,” the banker replied. “After they’re engaged, we’ll smoke some of my Cuban cigars to celebrate.”

“It’s a plan,” Steward said as he turned to leave.
