Chapter Fifteen
âHey, Harlan!â
Harlan was pleased and relieved to hear the genuine pleasure in Charlesâ voice when he answered the phone. âHi, Charles.â
âWhatâs up? Is everything okay?â
Harlan laughed. âYeah. Everythingâs fine. More than fine. Iâm just calling because, uhâ¦well, because itâs not an emergency.â He hoped Charles would remember saying that and he didnât just sound as weird as he usually did.
Charles answered with a soft chuckle of his own. âWell, Iâm glad to hear from you.â
Harlan took a deep, steadying breath. He could do this. Heâd already done the hard part and called Charles. Now he just had to complete the next step in his plan. âI was wondering if you might like toâ¦â Fuck. Heâd practiced what he wanted to say over and over in his head, but now it felt like that practice was only making it more difficult to actually speak. âIf youâd like to go for coffee?â he finally managed, turning a slight squeak at the end of the question into a cough.
âIâd like that. Well, maybe not coffee. I spend enough of my time shut away in a dark dungeonâliterallyâthat Iâd rather do something outside. And I think you could probably use some sunlight and fresh air, too.â
âOh, o-okayâ¦â Harlan scrambled to come up with something else. Shit. That threw all his ideas out of the window. He wasnât really one to come up with outdoor activities. The outdoors couldnât be ghost-warded.
His eyes widened. With Charles, they could be. This opened up a whole new world of possibilities.
âSure. Yeah, Iâd like that!â he bubbled. âDo you have any ideas?â
âOh, Iâve got plenty of ideas,â Charles said, a playful growl. âBut if youâre asking me on a dateâ¦â
âI am,â Harlan confirmed, almost confidently, glad Charles wasnât there to see him blush. God, that sound just went straight to his groin!
âHow about a picnic?â
The little pessimistic voice that lived in Harlan immediately chimed in with, Ants. Ghosts. Ghost ants, but he pushed it aside. âThat sounds lovely.â
âI keep bringing you food, but nothing Iâve actually made myself. Iâm told Iâm a pretty good cook.â
Shit. That probably meant that he expected⦠âDo you want me to bring anything?â Harlan asked reluctantly, mentally already searching, How do I pretend I made something store bought?
âJust you.â
âI can do that.â
âGreat. How does Monday or Tuesday sound? Those are my days off.â
Harlan bit his lip. âLunch or dinner?â
âWhichever you prefer. Dinner Monday or lunch Tuesday are slightly better for me, so I can sleep in Monday, but Iâm happy either way.â
Shit again. It wasnât out of the question that heâd still be working at dinnertime, and they didnât often take a formal lunch break. Hamilton brought something from home and ate on the go, and Harlan usually just skipped the meal entirely. âDinner Monday,â he said, decisively.
âGreat. Itâs a date. Iâll pick you up? I know a great parkâducks, a pond, the whole shebang.â
Harlan couldnât help grinning. âThat sounds perfect.â He actually held the phone to his chest for a moment after theyâd said goodbye.
