Chapter Eleven

“You have got to be kidding me,” I growl, slamming my hand down on the counter.

The assistant jumps at my outburst. Shit. I just swore at a woman. That’s so very not Griffin King. It’s not New Griffin King either. It’s just dickish. And it’s not exactly going to help Cassie get this loan, either.

I take a deep breath, calming myself so that I no longer sound like someone who’s skipped his court-ordered anger management classes. “I apologize for the language. I got carried away. I just don’t understand how he can be out again. One lunch meeting, I could understand. But two days in a row? You’re the ones who arranged these meetings in the first place!”

She makes a helpless gesture, face the color of a ripe tomato. She looks miserable. I bet I would be too, if I had to work for such a cretin. I doubt I’d still act as professionally as this woman, that’s for sure. Still, the fact that her boss is an ass doesn’t mitigate the fact that for the second day in a row, we’re being turned away.

“There must be something I can do,” Cassie says softly.

The assistant’s shoulders slump. “Look, I had no idea he was just going to leave. He always holds his lunch meetings here! I thought it was going to be a few minutes. But for some reason, today he told me he had to go out to meet someone. If you ask me, I think he’s dating someone.”

“Oh really?” says Cassie.

“That’s irrelevant,” I snap, because it is. Dating should be conducted during your personal time. You don’t screw over your customers just so you can get laid. You take care of them and then take care of your sexual needs on your own time. I would know; I did that exact damn thing this morning when I tested Nathan instead of tasting Cassie.

“Did he at least enjoy the bread? Did he say anything when you gave it to him?”

The assistant looks at Cassie with such pity that I ball my hands into my fists so I don’t do something really stupid, like barricade myself in the conference room until they’re forced to let Cassie present.

“Okay, hear me out. Why don’t you give me the presentation for today, and then I’ll pass along my notes?”

I want to snap that it’s a ridiculous plan; no way does this assistant have enough power to have any kind of say in this decision.

But Cassie jumps on the offer. “That would be wonderful, thank you!”

The assistant leads us into the conference room. She doesn’t bring a computer or even a notebook and pen. I doubt she’ll even remember a word of Cassie’s presentation. I suppose it’s nice of her to make the effort, even if it’s mostly an empty one.

“Okay, so what did you bring today?”

“Cookies. And brownies.”

“Oh my God, you didn’t.”

Cassie flushes, but nods.

“I probably shouldn’t tell you this, but I’m obsessed with the bread you brought in yesterday. It tasted exactly like my nonna’s when I visited her as a kid.
