CHAPTER 23

The year passed quickly after that. The border between Erasteen and Ydris was quiet for about 4 months, after which the previous routine of scheduled skirmishes resumed. A diplomat from Glimmen stayed for a few sevendays before moving on to Thrakorm with his entourage. Lady Wilhelmina and nine other Erastinians moved into a rarely-used guest wing in the Mount Rathbone keep, and life went on.

In the spring after Lora turned twenty one, a missive arrived from the king demanding that because nothing was happening at the northern border that two swordwielders were not needed there. It was decided that since she was still in training that Lora would return to Glimmen.

“You are always welcome back at any time for any reason,” Lord Errol said as he saw her off. “I’ll be petitioning for you to return as soon as I can.”

Phillip coughed. “Not that we’re war mongering here or anything,” he added as Dain chuckled next to him.

Laughing, Lora stepped away from the three men and mounted her horse. Her trunk had been sent ahead to Haven Dale. “I’ll be back,” she told them, not bothering to point out the slight of the Erastinians failing to see her off. “You’ve made me feel more at home here than anywhere else. If ever I’m able to travel outside of an assignment or a war, I’ll be here.”

She traveled to Glimmen with a small group of wielders who’d been secretly exchanged with another group of wielders. Lora shook her head at the type of mistrust this type of behavior fostered and wondered what the enemy was doing. Surely they were doing the same thing, if not worse. It was no wonder the region had never been without war for long. She hadn’t been in Azure Shores for as long and hadn’t been as involved in day-to-day diplomacy like she had in the past year in Mount Rathbone, but she assumed relations with Shaad were negatively propagated in a similar fashion.

The requisite stop in Haven Dale coincided with a very awkward visit from a minor lord from near James Lake who was hoping to foist his daughter on Lord Allistair. Lora wanted to laugh at her position as the ranking lady of the manor when Allistair all but commanded her to entertain the young lady who was about as interested him as he was in her.

The young woman, whose name was something flowery, wanted nothing to do with Lora. Since they’d been relegated to the women’s room, she couldn’t escape to the practice yard, so she irritated the flowery daughter with balance training and exercises for her wielding she thought would be safe to do indoors. Lora had been there three days, which was two days longer than she had planned, when the flowery daughter finally threw a most unladylike fit and demanded her father take her home.

As they watched the back of the carriage disappear from sight the following day, Lord Allistair sighed. “Thank you for that,” he told her. “They’re like vultures.
