CHAPTER TEN

July 4th 2020

My phone has gone off all night long from my friends who are back in Malibu, going on and on about how I’m missing the most ‘epic Fourth of July bash ever’. Which isn’t saying much, because they say every celebrity party is the most epic ever.

Little do they know there isn’t a single ounce of me that regrets choosing Taylor’s party over going there. The reason for that is entirely because of Raven. Slowly, as the night has progressed, I’ve been able to get her to join in conversation with our friends and myself. Little by little, she’s been looking more relaxed and enjoying herself. The sun is sinking behind the mountains, which means any time now, they’ll be setting off the fireworks from the bay underneath the Golden Gate Bridge.

I talked with Taylor and Nina, and they both agreed to help me get Raven alone so I can watch the fireworks with her and have a chance to finally talk to her in private. This is my only chance before she leaves and I lose my window of opportunity.

Waiting for my cue, I watch Nina, who’s taken Ian from Taylor so she can go ‘check his diaper’ and conveniently asks Raven to join her upstairs, and they head inside the house. I’m supposed to get a text from Nina once it’s time for me to make my way up to the third floor, which just so happens to have a magnificent view of the bridge from Nina and Taylor’s bedroom.

Everyone else is shuffling inside and heading up to the second story deck to watch the fireworks show as I lag behind, biding my time as I stare impatiently at my phone.

Just when I think she’s never going to text me and has decided to back out of the plan, my phone vibrates in my hand as Nina’s name pops up on my screen. She tells me to head up to the third story right now.

Not wasting a second, I sprint up the two flights of stairs, playfully giving Taylor the finger as he blows kisses my way when he spots me running past the set of French doors that lead out to the second story deck.

I can’t wipe the smile off of my face as my feet hit the top of the last stair leading up to Nina’s bedroom. I can hear her and Raven talking, and immediately recognize the sound of my name being spoken.

I decide to take that as my cue and knock on the bedroom door, causing them both to jump. They’re standing beside the floor-to-ceiling windows that line the entire wall facing the Pacific Ocean. This place has a magnificent view. Even nicer than my penthouse does. Taylor did good finding this place. I hope maybe one day, if I play my cards right, Raven and I can have a place like this to raise a family of our own in.
