Chapter 5

Trike

Trike let loose several missiles from the firing tubes mounted just under his cranial ridge. The backblast slowed his run, and ruined Stacy’s aim as she fired a nonstop stream at White Eye’s fleeing form. He heard Tara’s acknowledgement of White Eye’s presence, and kept up the run while he said, “There’s no way Washington is a diversion if White Eye’s here.”

Tara said, “Agreed.” He could hear sounds of fighting through her link. “There are still armed combatants here. Regroup on me.”

Trike spared a glance to see Spike shrug off the last of the raptors facing them on the capitol’s front grounds, and watched his tail smack into a lone human soldier still engaging him. Trike’s human comrades ran along behind him, incapable of keeping up completely when he used his rockets to propel himself forward. “On our way.”

He burst through the front entrance, shattering glass and splintering the large wooden doors. Trike had to duck to get in all the way, and Stacy hunkered down, holding on tightly as they cleared the small frame. As soon as they were through, Stacy resumed shooting, trying to pin White Eye down with suppressive fire, swearing as he spun through the blasts. Paintings flew off the walls, and statues crashed to the floor.

“All units, secure the building! We can’t let him escape!” Trike yelled. He directed the human soldiers outside, away from White Eye’s slashing claws, and the hail of bullets from White Eye’s human companions. As soon as Trike’s human allies were away, he launched two grenades from the mounted cannons on his shoulders. “Stacy, Tara, stay down!” They were the two least-armored on his strike force.

He extended the armor plating across his cranial ridge, and Stacy ducked behind it as the grenades exploded. Hundreds of rubber balls shot outward, pelting Trike’s foes and allies alike. His armor kept the tiny projectiles from hurting him, but Stacy yelped as the ricocheting balls hit her from behind. “Yikes!” She rubbed her shoulder where a welt was forming, then glared at the enemy soldiers still firing. “How are they still standing?”

Trike retracted his cranial ridge armor, giving Stacy a good vantage point to start firing again. Her shots knocked the human targets off their feet, and stunned raptors when she hit. Those stunned raptors soon fell to the vicious swings of Spike’s tail, or to Rexie’s bone-shattering kicks. White Eye ducked as Rexie lunged at him, her jaws shutting with an audible snap, and he punched out with an energy baton before spinning away again. His flight took him toward the east chambers, but he slipped and rolled on the multitude of rubber balls left by Trike’s grenades.

“Rexie, your rockets!” shouted Trike, keeping his own to medium burn. Rexie nodded her understanding; they’d face just as much trouble keeping their balance on the rolling rubber balls as their enemies if they didn’t burn through them with their foot-rockets. Every step they took, they left a puddle of molten rubber behind them. Soon the building was filled with the toxic smell of burnt rubber, and hazy smoke obscured their vision.
