1511. Thursday 24 June. Pope Julius II entered in Rome and that night slept in Santa Maria del Popolo. The next Friday at the 21st hour, he entered Via dell’Arco di trofoli [Via del Corso] and went to the via papale [Via Giulia], and turned towards Campo de’ Fiori and went up to St Peter’s, and in various places they made for him many festive ‘apparati’ with either triumphal arches or altars with the great happiness and compassion of the Roman populace. And he arrived with a beard because he had lost Bologna.30

It is precisely at this juncture that Raphael painted him in both the fresco Gregory IX in the Room of the Segnatura and in the London portrait.
