Kim scurried into her bedroom to get outfitted for a rescue while Rico rushed out the door, mumbling something about his SAR bag.

By the time she’d donned cargo pants, a t-shirt, her flannel, heavy socks, and hiking boots, Rico had also changed and was shrugging his backpack over one shoulder.

“They’re setting up at the trailhead for Dorr Mountain. Going in one car makes more sense.” She unzipped her bag for a last check, even though she always made sure it was repacked after every rescue. The list of supplies she’d need scrolled through her head as she rifled through the contents.

“Mine or yours?” Rico asked. “Your car takes up less space than my truck.”

“My car it is.”

In minutes, they were headed down the main road and soon arrived at the staging area. Slim Cantor was heading the search. Good. He was organized and sensible, and Kim always appreciated it when he was the incident commander.

Slim glanced up as they approached him. The ever-present scowl on the large man’s face lifted for a second. “Glad you could both make it. Let me get a few more searchers rounded up before I give out details.”

Theo wandered over, and Rico shook his hand. “Chelsea all set with the kids?”

“I got Jordan in pajamas before I left, and Teddy’s starting to sleep for longer stretches now. Angie’s around if there’s a problem. How was your island exile?”

Rico smirked and glanced at Kim. “Could have been worse. Kim kept me company for half of the time, and I managed to get by on my own the rest of the week.”

The corners of Theo’s mouth curved up. “Dina missed you. She mentioned the Fourth of July carriage ride and her plans for that. Are you going?”

Rico centered on Kim with puppy dog eyes. “Are you working on the Fourth of July? The ranger service does a carriage ride up Day Mountain for employees with sandwiches and stuff at the top.”

“I’m working overnight the night before, then have the next two days off.”

He tipped his head. “So?”

“So … what? Is there another question in there?” She couldn’t let him get off that easily.

“Would you like to come on the carriage ride?”

Kim crossed her arms over her chest. “I don’t work for the park service.”

Rico scowled. “I’m inviting you to come as my guest.”

“Ah, that wasn’t made clear. You need to work on your communication skills, Ranger Montenegro.”

Slim called out for all present to gather around. “We’ve had a report of two missing teenagers. They were dropped off to climb Dorr Mountain and should have been at the pick-up spot well over three hours ago. The parents are worried and say they haven’t been able to contact them on their phones.”

Rico raised his hand. “How old are these teenagers? Are we talking fourteen or nineteen?”

“Are they a couple that could be looking for some alone time?” another SAR member called out. They’d had rescues like that before.

“Two males, both eighteen. The information is they’ve hiked but not extensively, though they both played sports in high school and are in good shape physically.
