Chapter 4

DAVID WOKE next to Brian. At first he tried to remember where he was and why he was there. He’d had weird dreams and remembered taking some pain medication that must have made him a little loopy. The first thing he remembered clearly was spending the night with Brian. His ankle ached like hell and he needed something for the pain. But as he slowly rolled onto his side, he realized he needed something else as well. Brian was still sound asleep, and David let a hand travel under the covers and then glide over Brian’s back. He rubbed slowly, and Brian rolled onto his belly and mumbled something he couldn’t understand. It was still early and David listened. The wind seemed to have died away, which meant everyone would be up soon. There would be a lot of work to get done, and if the sun came out and warmed things up, that would mean additional work cleaning up from the storms.

“Brian,” David said softly, smiling when Brian rolled over and cracked his eyes open.

“Hey,” Brian said with a grin. “I guess I didn’t dream last night after all.”

“Nope,” David said and pushed back the covers. “I don’t know how you feel about the guys knowing what happened last night, but they’re going to figure it out as soon as they see me coming out of your room.”

Brian shrugged. A few days earlier he would have worried, but not now. “Is it still storming?” he asked with a yawn.

“I don’t think so,” David answered. “I haven’t heard the wind, so I bet it’s going to be a busy day.”

“Yeah. Digging out again.” Brian sat up, the covers pooling around his waist.

David propped his head on his hand on one hand and with his other slowly stroked along Brian’s chest. The muscles weren’t huge and defined like pictures of guys he’d seen in skin mags. This was what he expected from a cowboy—lean muscles from hard work and the scars from life. David moved closer, wanting to tug Brian down into a kiss and begin an encore of last night. But footsteps in the hall followed by the voices of the men as they got up and began moving around put an end to that idea. Some of the guys were gay, but most were straight, and while they were supportive, he figured there was no need to put on a show.

“I better get up,” Brian said. “They aren’t going to expect to see you anyway, so stay here and relax. I’ll bring you some ice and something for pain.” Brian smiled at him and then leaned close. They shared a quick kiss, and then Brian got out of bed. David watched Brian’s bare cowboy butt as he wandered around the room, and he stifled a groan as Brian stepped into his underwear and an old pair of jeans. Then he took them off again and David wondered if he was being treated to a show.

“Is that for me?” David asked with a smile.
