Eight

“I don’t see any cattle.”

That was Chance’s greeting when he got back to Evergreen Ranch.

“Well, that’s because I didn’t go get them,” Chance said. “Where the hell is my horse, by the way?”

“Hell if I know,” Kit said. “Keep track of your shit.”

“Yeah, I don’t know,” Jace said.

“Is she here?”

“Why don’t you know?” Boone asked.

Well, he was going to enjoy this.

“I don’t know,” he said, “because I have had amnesia.”

His brothers exchanged a glance. Seated around the table outside one of the barns, where they all took their lunch, they had been eating sandwiches and planning the day when Chance showed up.

He had stopped off at his cabin and taken a very long shower.

Put on some of his own clothes that actually fit, and tried to make absolutely certain that he had his thoughts together.

“You do not have amnesia,” Boone said. “That is idiotic. That’s like the time we told Kit that Dad was going to sell him to a traveling band to play the washboard and set him out at the edge of the property at ten p.m. He believed it because he was eight. We’re not eight.”

“I did,” he said. “I spent days not knowing who I was, and I don’t know what happened to my horse.”

His brothers looked at each other. “Seriously,” Boone said.

“Seriously. I don’t know what happened to my horse, who I can only assume ran back here. But I’m a little concerned about her.”

“Well. I don’t know. It’s entirely possible one of the hands did something with her.”

“Great,” he said. “Not only did you assholes never try to contact me, and get concerned about me, you don’t know where my horse is.”

Flint frowned. “Where have you been?”

“It’s a long story,” he said. “However, it ends with the fact that Juniper Sohappy is going to be working here. She owes me.”

“Well, I need to hear the long story,” Kit said, kicking back in his chair. “Because you’re claiming to have been struck down with amnesia and now I hear Juniper Sohappy is involved. So it is story fuckin’ time.”

This was the part he was looking forward to less.

“Fine. She found me, she rescued me. But I didn’t remember who I was. And she told me that I was her ranch hand.”

Boone just about fell out of his chair. Kit was laughing so hard that Chance thought he might choke, while Jace was shaking his head, his eyes wide. “Well, damn,” Jace said.

“Yeah. So.”

He noticed they were happy to believe the amnesia thing now.

“I knew she hated you,” Boone said, wiping tears off his face, “but that is really something. So she held you hostage all this time?”

“Yeah. Torture every hour.”

“Really.” Boone and Flint looked at each other.

“Shut the fuck up,” Chance said. But he couldn’t even really be mad, because they were right.

He had in fact slept with her. That was in fact a thing that had happened.

“We’ll behave ourselves,” Flint said. “When she gets here. Unless you don’t want us to. Which would be fair.
