Twenty-One

I slowly made my way toward the storeroom. The thought of facing Liv again filled me with dread and made each step I took feel like a thousand yards. My plan was to read Liv while she was still asleep, learn something that might calm her down, and change her mind about killing my friends. It was dishonest, and I wasn’t proud of myself, but it was way better than the alternative. Unfortunately, reading her was the easy part. The hard part would come when I lifted the spell and woke her up. Hopefully, she’d just rough me up, but judging from our last chat, my guess was that she’d probably kick my ass.

Like most of my plans, this one ended up dead in the water before I ever got started. As I approached the storeroom door, I heard voices floating up the hall toward me. Drawing closer, I realized it was Pandora and Callie.

I stopped just inside the room and was surprised to see Liv wide awake and sitting calmly in the chair where I’d left her. She was no longer bound, and she appeared to be listening politely to Pandora and Callie. It was an act for sure.

Liv was one of those people who wore her emotions on the outside, which made it easy for someone with my gift to know exactly what her current mood was. Right now, she was a mixture of angry, distrustful, and curious. That last one caught me off guard and made me feel almost guilty for invading her mental privacy. Much to my surprise, not to mention joy, she was listening to them because she actually was attracted to me and didn’t want to believe that I was an enemy.

It was probably the dorky fist pump and not so subtle “yes!” that gave me away, but when they saw me standing there, they stopped talking and just stared at me.

I suddenly felt like a thick juicy slab of rib roast being tossed into a den of hungry lions. Something deep and primal inside me yelled, “Run!” while something slightly more rational cautioned me to just smile and keep my mouth shut.

After a few awkward seconds of internal debate, I went with the smile, but the urge to run was still pretty strong. I was beyond relieved when Callie smiled back and said, “Hey, Danny. I hope you don’t mind that I undid your sleep spell so we girls could have a friendly chat.”

I gulped like a buffoon and murmured something unintelligible. It earned me eye rolls from Pandora and Liv, but at least neither of them stabbed me or shot me with a crossbow, so I took that as a win.

Then Liv got up and stalked toward me. Of course, I did the least manly thing imaginable and started backing away into the hallway like a sissy. She lunged for me, and I barely managed to contain my wussy-like squeal as I pulled my arms up in front of me in a defensive stance.
